Saanich has been the home to First Nations people for thousands of years. The non-native history begins with the arrival of the Hudson's Bay Company in the 1840s.

The eastern side of Saanich is dominated by the University of Victoria, which is much an element of the local life of the community.

The landscape of Saanich is unique because of its ecological diversity and leisure potential. There's 170 municipal parks, regional parks as well as a walking network route. Saanich has more parks per capita than any other municipality in B.C. There's several golf courses in Saanich: Blenkinsop Valley, Cedar Hill, Cordova Bay and Prospect Lake.

Saanich's distinct neighbourhoods include: Gordon Head, an area with several shopping malls, restaurants and film theatres within a short driving distance; High Quadra, which overlooks the Blenkinsop Valley; Broadmead, with its imaginative West Coast architecture; and Cordova Bay, which is perched along the seaside and includes a mix of cottages, small farms, massive relatives homes and new subdivisions.

EDUCATION

The northeastern half of British Columbia's third largest university, the University of Victoria campus, is in Saanich, while the southwestern portion is in neighbouring Oak Bay. Saanich is also home to both major campuses of Camosun College, the original Lansdowne campus which is also divided between Saanich and Oak Bay and the Interurban campus.

Saanich is divided between two bordering school districts, School District 61 Greater Victoria and School District 63 Saanich. It is also the home of South Island Distance Education School.
